Lanolin Purification for Cosmetic Applications
Lanolin is a widely used ingredient in skincare products and is valued for its moisturizing, protective, and skin-conditioning properties. As a result, lanolin purification plays a crucial role in ensuring the high quality and safety standards required for cosmetic applications. Thanks to its ability to support the skin’s natural barrier and help retain moisture, lanolin can be found in a variety of cosmetic formulations, including creams, lotions, balms, and more.
Lanolin is a natural wax derived from sheep wool grease. After shearing, raw wool contains not only valuable wool grease but also dirt, sweat salts, and traces of pesticides. These pesticides are commonly used in sheep farming to protect animals from parasites that can affect wool quality.
The first step in lanolin production is washing the raw wool with hot water and detergents. During this process, the wool grease is emulsified and transferred into the wash water. Centrifuges and separation equipment are then used to recover crude lanolin from the water and remove solids.
However, pesticide residues remain in the wool grease and are therefore present in the crude lanolin. To meet the high purity requirements of the cosmetics industry, lanolin purification requires several refining and separation steps to remove contaminants and ensure product safety.
This is where VTA’s distillation technology plays a crucial role. By utilizing short path distillation, pesticides and other undesirable components can be efficiently removed while preserving the valuable characteristics of the lanolin. The gentle processing conditions make short path distillation particularly suitable for temperature-sensitive products and high-value ingredients.
The result is high-purity, cosmetic-grade lanolin that meets the demanding quality standards of modern skincare applications and can be used in a wide range of premium cosmetic products.
